Statement of intent

For my NEA piece, I am going to work independently on Brief 4: music video and online to produce a three-minute music video for a fictional dance/artist signed to Universal Music and the working website for the band/artist. My production will be aimed at a culturally sophisticated, 16-25 class AB demographic. I am going to promote the fictional artist 'Reign' through the use of a quirky video, through the portrayal of a girl who represents my artist as the main singer along with two other fictional artists who will be featured in the video. They will be rolling in and out of shot whilst lip syncing different verses of the song, whilst the lighting alternates from red to white with the beat. The premise of the video is to create a unique and new type of music video, straying away from stereotypical narratives that are usually featured in music videos. In terms of editing, I will include long continuous shots to create a flow for the audience and make the movement of my acto...

Note to examiner

Dear moderator my name is Ambar Kaur Bal candidate N.O ...., and welcome to my A level Media studies blog. This is a record of the work I have undertaken for the Making Media (component 03/04) non- examined assessment (NEA) within the OCR H409 GCE A level course in Media Studies. I worked independently on brief 4: music video and online to produce a three-minute music video for a fictional dance band/artist signed to Universal Music and the working website for the band/artist. My production is aimed at a culturally sophisticated, 16–25 class AB demographic. Below you will find evidence of my research and planning for this task, including: * my research into professionally produced music videos and artist websites that are similar in genre, style and form to those proposed in my chosen production brief. This includes:               * My deconstruction, analysis, and notes on these professionally produced music videos and artist websites that ha...

Website Research

When conducting research into artists websites and designs, I opted to choose artists and bands who produce the same genre of music as my artist. The first website I looked at was Jorja Smith's, her website design was very simple using only plain colors such as greens, whites, and blacks. The first page featured a large photo of her, this is something I want to incorporate into my website. This highlights who the artist is to the audience. As well as her new video and her tour dates https://www.jorjasmith.com/ Dua Lipa's website is another source of inspiration for me as it features vibrant colors with the edit of a photo of the artist. This is something I will incorporate into my website as I want to carry out media convergence between my video and my artist through the use of vibrant colors and edits. http://swansong.dualipa.com/ Although Tame Impala is a band, I can draw a lot of inspiration from this website, as their home page includes trippy edits and photos...

Website Planning

These are some screenshots from my website as I am working on it: Home page Things I need to include: Title Background Pop up window (lightbox) Music video The single About my artist Gallery BACKGROUND - Currently, I am choosing my background for the home page, I am deciding between having a video in the background which would be slightly more entertaining or having a plain background and a picture of my artist. Using an editing app I will be able to turn one of my pictures into a video that is representative of my artist's style and the theme of my video. TITLE - I have decided I want my title for the home page to be plain and bold text, this will mean it can stand out against the colors and movement of my background without making the home page too distracting. POP UP - I will also have a pop-up window MUSIC VIDEO - my music video will be directly under the first part of my home page, meaning its accessible and labeled clearly. I will feature a short cl...

Possible injuries that can occur: -Pulley related injury How to resolve this issue and prevent issues occurring: -Ensure that pulleys are safely operated and that those using the pulleys handle them safely. Also, ensure they are aware of hazards. Possible injuries that can occur: -Rig collapsing How to resolve this issue and prevent issues occurring: - Ensure rig is fastened securely and set up in a clear area to avoid anything knocking it down. Possible injuries that can occur: -Camera falling How to resolve this issue and prevent issues occurring: Due to the camera being placed above the head of the actors, I will fasten the camera securely onto the rig using multiple layers of duct tape and a secondary rig that the camera is tightened onto. Possible injuries that can occur: Light damaging the eye How to resolve this issue and prevent issues occurring: Ensure that the lights are not shining directly at patients using a slight angle on the camera set up to...

Storyboard

Image
INTRO: The opening shot will look slightly like this, with the floorboards being the main shot with a faded light, the title will zoom in and fade out before the actors go into the shot. This first scene will be silent for roughly 10 seconds before the song begins the video features three actors moving in and out of the shot using pulleys. I like the light effects and will replicate both the movement of the actors and the lights as they are entertaining, quirky and portray the brand image of my artist. In order to do this, I will strap my camera to a metal stand to get the same downward facing shot. I will also be exploring different fonts PRE-CHORUS: This is my second shot for the pre-chorus, the duration of which will feature only one of my actors who is also the artist of the song lipsyncing. She will stay in shot whilst two actors will move in and out of shot. The lighting for this will also be red and white. CHORUS: The chorus will feature all thr...

Lighting

Lighting Whilst deciding on the lighting for my video I explored numerous options and combinations to see which ones are both aesthetically pleasing and effective in matching the tone of the video whilst complimenting the actors' clothing. The possible combinations included: Red and blue- which I found to be too distracting when put together in strobe Blue and green- these two colors blended together, so it didn't has as much of a distinctive change in tone Red and white- This combination works really well as the colors are not similar therefore when they change during the fast beats of the song they are more noticeable and have more of an impact when they change.

Location report

I want my video to be quirky, innovative and entertaining. To capture and display this to my audience the location plays a vital role, in my video, I will be using two locations floorboards in a hall and a white wall. The reasoning behind these choices stemmed from the inspiration I had gotten from other examples of music videos I deemed quirky and entertaining. They all shared one common effect which is lighting, therefore in order to display the lighting effects to its fullest capacity I chose plain walls and floorboards as they don't overpower the lighting effects, pull focus from the main actors in the video and distract the audience. The lighting will consist of red and white lighting as they are the right colours to not create too much of a distraction for the audience.

Treatment

Treatment Song: Hope by The Chainsmokers Genre: Dance music Target audience: 16+, no specific gender Narrative: Cuts from characters in the video moving in and out of frame whilst lip syncing and close up shots  Location: Stage                  Room wall Props: pulleys            light system            Jackets            Camera Rig Budget: low budget music video, used the materials I already own

Final Song

Image
The song I am using for my video is Hope by the Chainsmokers, it fits the genre of dance music. The characteristics of dance music which is by definition a type of popular music intended for dancing to in clubs, typically having a repetitive beat and a synthesized backing track that features sound samples. The song hope fits the genre as it features a repetitive beat as well as numerous beat drops

Music video

Image
After conducting research into different styles of filming I have decided to take inspiration from Asap Rocky's music video for his song L$D. In the music video, he uses glowing and pulsating effects to make the background almost come to life and be more included in the video itself. This is especially useful when the video only features one person in each shot. The music video that I want to film will follow the same layout, with one or two people in a shot and each time. To make my video more entertaining I will adopt the style of editing Asap rocky used his music video. This is the real video  These are the tutorials for effects

Website Template

Image
The template I have decided on is a makeup blog template I liked the template over the other ones because it had space for three evenly sized pictures which I liked. The layout was clear and the home page didn't look too cluttered with information. Originally it looked like this: After editing the home page I used the same font for my singer's name which is Reign, I used the Wix picture library and chose pictures which would closely resemble what kind of pictures I would like to put on my website.  Once I had chosen the pictures I would like to replicate I began choosing backgrounds that would complement the three pictures and also the dusty pink font. The website offers both still pictures and also videos as the background, I sampled both videos and pictures and found that both backgrounds fit the theme I want for the website. These backgrounds will give me inspiration for the type of background I want to use on my website. On the left ar...

Wolf Alice - Dont delete the kisses

Image
The band Wolf Alice who produces rock music released a song called don't delete the kisses. The music video to the song was extremely captivating and easily replicable, The video takes place on the train and buses. Using public transport as the filming locations create a real-life video and make it more applicable emotionally to the audience. The video follows the journey of two young lovers, through their relationships ups and downs. The video consists of a large number of different shots and the editing makes the video even more impressive, the camera also captures the public reactions to the couple which makes it more realistic. The video is not filmed in very high quality and could potentially be replicated on a phone. Wolf Alice recently won the Mercury prize in 2018 for their album 'Visions of a life'

Website Ideas

Image
Website ideas I want to incorporate nature into my video, making one of my locations a field. Due to its significance in the video, I think it would be important to link my website design to the locations featured. However, if I do choose to use a photo like this I would incorporate color. Either using a filter or smoke bombs This design is more simple, with the use of monochromatic colors to reflect the image the band is trying to portray. This could be a possibility for a website design as it isn't too bold and confusing allowing me to add more written detail and focus on a bolder font instead.
Image
Collage This mood board of pictures shows different potential settings that I may want to film at for my video. settings such as city landscapes with footage of buildings and streets in the background and also the use of bright neon lights and cars to make the video more fun and interesting to watch and film.
Treatment Song: Devil eyes by Hippie Sabotage duration: 5:15 - shorten down to 3 mins Target audience: Teens/ young adults - age ranges of 15- 20 location: variety of locations, including: fields buildings streets video outline: the video begins in a field with people walking camera pans into the building where 3 people are standing, before the beat drops close up and then pan out during beat drop ( smoke bombs go off). the camera cuts to cars on the street. overall I want my music video to be creative and interesting with lots of different settings and things happening in the video.
